Opinions & Observations Pro & College 10-16-08

College Football

1st Head Coach firing came from Clemson, as Tommy Bowden is out, but he will still collect his paycheck. Under Bowden, Clemson generally won the games they were supposed to win, but seldom could come up with a big game win. Despite the fact that Bowden is not a great gameday coach, he is a good recruiter and will likely be a head coach again next season.

South Carolina: 2nd-string QB Stephen Garcia came in off the bench on Saturday to rescue the Gamecocks and lead them to a victory in Kentucky. Starting QB Smelley just makes too many bonehead plays; expect to see Garcia taking more snaps for SC.

Oklahoma: Oklahoma cannot win the big games under Bob Stoops-they lost the Orange Bowl in '04 to USC, lost to Texas 2 out of 3 years, lost to Texas Tech, and lost bowl games to Boise State and West Virginia.

NFL: Dallas Cowboys: The Commish did the right thing in suspending "Pacman" until further notice (now they say he is checking into rehab). But can the 'Boys stop the pass without CB's Newman or Adam Jones? Will have to wait and see. The acquisition of WR Roy Williams from Detroit, another expensive player, is not going to help out on Defense and what they need in the way of a WR is someone who can throw blocks, run the right patterns and catch all of the balls that come his way-a WR Wes Welker clone. I don't think owner Jerry Jones will ever get it; like Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, he wants Pro Bowl player at every position, when in the salary cap era, teams need role players.

NFL Totals: This past Sunday, 4 games were OVER the total, with 10 games staying UNDER. The past few weeks have shown the oddsmakers gradually bumping up the lines on totals, as the average points per game so far is high, at 45. Overs have paid 55% of the time in this new season. Also some recent lines show how the public can cause significant movement; Tennessee/Baltimore two weeks ago, opened at Titans -3; but the public went mad for the underdog Ravens on Sunday and the line went down to Tennessee -1. Final score was a Titans win 13-10. This week, Tampa opened at home vs. Carolina at a 3-point favorite and the public, loving those road warrior Panthers, bet the line down to -1.5. Tampa won, 27-3.
